Ladies of POWER!

Power lifting, what is the first thing that comes to mind when I use that term. It might be "oh that could be dangerous" or "I don't want to hurt my back" maybe even (must I say it) "I can't"

Some people think of very large grunting men, who may consume a rather large number of calories or better yet "eat what ever they want".

But that is not what powerlifting really is. That's not all it is at least but it is what people make it out to be.

Since my time at Chris Fit my powerlifting outlook and knowledge has grown tremendously. A sport I already felt comfortable and proficient in. I have come to learn anyone can do it and everyone can benefit from the actions, that the fear and stigma of the sport is all that needs to be overcome, that with the proper training and knowledge of the form powerlifting is a powerful (no pun intended) fitness tool.

There are 3 powerlifting movements. The Dead lift, back squat and the bench press. This powerful trio works your entire body and can cut your time spent in the gym as well.

Performing these intense movements increase your metabolic rate. The rate at which the body burns energy at work and at rest. In other-words these movements will increase the number of calories your burn though the day even when your body is at rest. More muscle fibers are being stressed during these three compound movements from both using more muscle groups and the demand of the increased weight. Having more muscle fibers engaged results in a leaner physique because more muscles are burning and continuing the deep burn throughout the 48 hours that follow a powerlifting based workout.

Powerlifting is a great tool for any trainee because of the increased demand and number of targeted muscle groups within one exercise the trainee can spend less time in the gym and more time burning calories. The calories are still burning hours after you have even been to the gym and most likely into your next session!

Powerlifting and resistance training in general is also a great tool to prevent osteoporosis and strengthen connective tissue creating ease on the joints and less risk of injury.

As mentioned earlier any one can benefit from power lifting.  It is not just a men's sport and contrary to common belief there's really no age limit! Women are quickly taking over the powerlifting stage and transforming theirs bodies with the sport, in your own gym and across the country.

Mandy from Nebraska says it made her stronger with out getting "bulky" a big concern for most novice lifters!
Colleen from Toronto said when she stumbled in to the powerlifting arena she could hardly hold a stance and now is lifting hundreds of pounds (dead lift- 365, squat- 275, bench 185) and staying lean because of it!
